CMECP® Master Electrician Certification Programs

Two Professional Paths. One Advanced CMECP® Standard.

The Certified Master Electrical Code Professional® (CMECP®) program is a voluntary advanced training and certification program designed for experienced electrical professionals and electrical contracting companies that want to go beyond minimum licensing requirements.

CMECP® focuses on advanced electrical code knowledge, professional development, continuing education, leadership, technical competency, and raising professional standards throughout the electrical industry.

The CMECP® program now offers two separate professional certification paths:

Path 1 — CMECP® Certified Contractor

A company-level certification program for qualified electrical contracting businesses.

Path 2 — CMECP® Certified Technician

An individual Master Electrician Certification program for qualified Master Electricians or Equivalents.

These are two distinct certification paths.

A CMECP® Certified Contractor receives four included CMECP® Certified Technician course enrollments that may be provided to qualified individuals within the company.

However, those technician enrollments do not automatically provide certification.

Each technician must independently qualify for and successfully complete all requirements of the CMECP® Certified Technician program.

In addition, any qualified Master Electrician or Equivalent may apply directly for the CMECP® Certified Technician program as a standalone applicant without being affiliated with a CMECP® Certified Contractor.

PATH 1 — CMECP® CERTIFIED CONTRACTOR

Company-Level Certification for Electrical Contractors

The CMECP® Certified Contractor program is designed for established electrical contracting companies that want to demonstrate a higher commitment to professional development, advanced electrical education, workforce training, leadership, and continuing technical growth.

This is a company-level certification.

The program allows a qualifying electrical contractor to earn recognition as a CMECP® Certified Contractor while also creating a structured professional development pathway for qualified Master Electricians within the organization.

The goal is not simply to certify a business.

The goal is to help electrical contractors develop stronger companies through advanced training, professional recognition, technical education, and continued development of their workforce.

CMECP® Certified Contractor Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the CMECP® Certified Contractor program:

• The applicant must be an established electrical contracting business.

• The electrical contracting company must have been actively operating for a minimum of twelve (12) months.

• The electrical contracting company must be owned by a Master Electrician or Equivalent recognized within the state in which the company operates.

• The qualifying Master Electrician or Equivalent must successfully complete the required CMECP® training and certification process.

• Business operation, company ownership, professional licensing, and qualifying credentials are subject to verification before acceptance into the program.

The qualifying Master Electrician or Equivalent must successfully complete the same advanced CMECP® educational standards associated with the certification process.

CMECP® Certified Contractor Training Requirements

The qualifying individual for the CMECP® Certified Contractor program must successfully complete the CMECP® four-month training and evaluation process.

The program includes:

• Four (4) months of required CMECP® online education

• Nineteen (19) unit competency examinations

• A minimum passing score of 80% on each required competency examination

• A remotely proctored 100-question National Electrical Code® examination

• A minimum passing score of 80% on the final proctored examination

• A minimum 500-word technical lesson or essay

• CMECP® Review Board evaluation and approval

The four-month training period begins on the date the approved CMECP® training program is purchased or activated.

The qualifying individual must successfully complete all applicable program requirements before the electrical contracting company may receive the CMECP® Certified Contractor designation.

CMECP® Certified Contractor Program Fee

Initial Program Fee: $3,975.00 USD

The CMECP® Certified Contractor program is designed as a complete company-level professional development package.

The $3,975.00 program fee includes:

• CMECP® Certified Contractor application and qualification review

• Verification of the company’s minimum twelve-month business history

• Company ownership verification

• Master Electrician or Equivalent credential verification

• Four (4) months of CMECP® training for the qualifying contractor representative

• All required competency examinations

• Remote proctored National Electrical Code® examination

• Technical lesson or essay review

• CMECP® Review Board evaluation

• Initial CMECP® Certified Contractor certification

• Four (4) CMECP® Certified Technician course enrollments

Four Included CMECP® Certified Technician Course Enrollments

Every CMECP® Certified Contractor package includes:

Four (4) CMECP® Certified Technician Course Enrollments

These course enrollments may be assigned to qualified individuals within the CMECP® Certified Contractor’s organization.

These four enrollments are included within the $3,975.00 CMECP® Certified Contractor program fee.

The purpose of the included technician enrollments is to allow the contractor to begin developing qualified electrical professionals within the organization under the CMECP® professional standard.

However, it is extremely important to understand:

A Course Enrollment Is Not a Certification.

Receiving one of the four included technician course enrollments does not automatically make an individual a CMECP® Certified Technician.

Each technician must independently qualify for Path 2.

Each technician must be a:

Master Electrician or Equivalent

within the applicable state of operation.

Each participating technician must then independently complete and successfully pass all requirements of the CMECP® Certified Technician program.

Those requirements include:

• Four (4) months of CMECP® training

• All nineteen (19) required competency examinations

• Minimum required passing scores

• The 100-question remotely proctored National Electrical Code® examination

• Required technical lesson or essay

• CMECP® Review Board evaluation and approval

Only after independently satisfying every Path 2 requirement will that individual earn the designation:

CMECP® Certified Technician

The contractor provides the opportunity.

The technician earns the certification.

Certified Thermal Imaging Course

This additional training opportunity is designed to help participating electrical contractors expand their technical knowledge and explore additional professional services involving thermal imaging, electrical system evaluation, preventive maintenance, and related electrical applications.

The inclusion of specialized technical training reflects the broader CMECP® vision of helping qualified electrical contractors continue developing beyond minimum licensing requirements.

CMECP® Certified Contractor Certification Process

Step 1 — Apply

Submit the CMECP® Certified Contractor application and the required business, licensing, and ownership information.

CMECP® will verify:

• The company has been operating for a minimum of twelve (12) months.

• The company is owned by a Master Electrician or Equivalent.

• The applicable license or professional credential is valid and acceptable within the state of operation.

Step 2 — Become Approved

Once all eligibility requirements have been verified, the company will receive authorization to enter the CMECP® Certified Contractor program.

Step 3 — Begin the Four-Month Training Program

The qualifying Master Electrician or Equivalent will receive access to the required CMECP® training program.

The participant has four (4) months to complete the required online education and competency examinations.

Step 4 — Complete the Competency Examinations

The participant must successfully complete all nineteen (19) competency examinations.

A minimum score of 80% is required on each applicable competency examination.

Step 5 — Pass the CMECP® Proctored Examination

After successfully completing the required coursework and competency examinations, the participant must successfully pass the CMECP® remotely proctored examination.

The examination consists of:

• 100 National Electrical Code® questions

• Fill-in-the-blank format

• Open-book examination

• Remote proctoring

• Minimum passing score of 80%

Step 6 — Complete the Technical Submission

The participant must submit a minimum 500-word technical lesson or essay addressing an article, section, concept, or topic from the National Electrical Code® edition assigned to the current CMECP® program.

The submission must be received within ten (10) business days following completion of the applicable examination requirements.

The submission will be evaluated by the five-member CMECP® Review Board.

A passing recommendation from at least three (3) of the five (5) Review Board members is required.

Step 7 — Earn CMECP® Certified Contractor Status

After successful completion of all requirements, the qualifying electrical contracting company will receive recognition as a:

CMECP® Certified Contractor

This designation recognizes the electrical contracting company’s commitment to advanced electrical education, professional development, workforce training, technical excellence, and higher professional standards.

CMECP® Certified Contractor Annual Renewal

Annual Renewal Fee: $595.00 USD

The CMECP® Certified Contractor designation must be renewed annually to remain active.

The $595.00 annual renewal fee includes:

• Annual renewal of the company-level CMECP® Certified Contractor certification

• Continued participation in applicable CMECP® Certified Contractor benefits

• Applicable annual CMECP® certification renewal for active CMECP® Certified Technicians maintained under that contractor’s program

CMECP® Certified Technicians who are properly maintained under an active CMECP® Certified Contractor program are not charged the separate standalone technician renewal fee while covered under that contractor’s active program.

Applicable continuing education, professional credential, participation, and certification maintenance requirements must still be satisfied.

If a CMECP® Certified Technician is no longer maintained under an active CMECP® Certified Contractor program, that technician may transition to the standalone CMECP® Certified Technician renewal structure.

One Contractor Program. One Annual Renewal. Continued Development of the CMECP® Team.

PATH 2 — CMECP® CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN

Individual Master Electrician Certification

The CMECP® Certified Technician program is a completely separate individual certification path available to qualified Master Electricians or Equivalents.

An applicant does not have to work for or participate under a CMECP® Certified Contractor to enter this program.

Any Qualified Master Electrician or Equivalent May Apply Directly.

The CMECP® Certified Technician program is designed for electrical professionals who have already completed the difficult journey required to become a Master Electrician or obtain an Equivalent credential recognized within their state of operation.

Becoming a Master Electrician is already a significant professional accomplishment.

The CMECP® Certified Technician program takes that professional development further.

Through advanced National Electrical Code® education, electrical code interpretation, technical application, competency testing, and professional development, the program provides qualified Master Electricians with an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge beyond ordinary licensing requirements.

This is the CMECP® standalone Master Electrician Certification pathway.

Two Ways to Enter the CMECP® Certified Technician Program

A qualified individual may enter the CMECP® Certified Technician program in one of two ways.

Option 1 — Standalone Enrollment

Any qualified Master Electrician or Equivalent may apply directly for the CMECP® Certified Technician program.

The applicant does not need to be employed by or affiliated with a CMECP® Certified Contractor.

The standalone program fee is:

$995.00 USD

Option 2 — Contractor-Sponsored Enrollment

A qualified Master Electrician or Equivalent may receive one of the four technician course enrollments included within a CMECP® Certified Contractor program.

In this situation, the underlying technician course enrollment is included within the contractor’s package.

However, the individual technician must still independently satisfy every eligibility, education, examination, technical submission, and Review Board requirement of the CMECP® Certified Technician program.

The Certification Standard Is Exactly the Same.

Whether the technician enters through standalone enrollment or through a CMECP® Certified Contractor:

The same qualifications apply.

The same training applies.

The same examinations apply.

The same passing scores apply.

The same essay requirement applies.

The same Review Board approval applies.

There is no abbreviated or automatic certification pathway.

CMECP® Certified Technician Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the CMECP® Certified Technician program:

• The applicant must be a licensed Master Electrician or Equivalent within the state of operation.

• The applicant’s license or equivalent professional credential must be verified and approved before enrollment.

• The applicant must successfully complete the required four-month CMECP® training program.

• The applicant must successfully complete all nineteen (19) competency examinations.

• The applicant must successfully pass the final CMECP® remotely proctored National Electrical Code® examination.

• The applicant must successfully complete the required technical lesson or essay.

• The applicant must receive the required approval of the CMECP® Review Board.

The CMECP® Certified Technician designation does not replace state licensing.

It demonstrates that an already qualified Master Electrician or Equivalent has voluntarily pursued advanced electrical education and successfully demonstrated an elevated level of National Electrical Code® knowledge and competency.

You earned the Master Electrician license. Now take your knowledge to the next level.

CMECP® Certified Technician Program Fee

Standalone Initial Program Fee: $995.00 USD

The $995.00 CMECP® Certified Technician program fee includes:

• Applicant license or professional credential verification

• Four (4) months of CMECP® training

• All nineteen (19) required competency examinations

• Remote proctored 100-question National Electrical Code® examination

• Technical lesson or essay review

• CMECP® Review Board evaluation

• Initial CMECP® Certified Technician certification processing

A qualified participant receiving one of the four technician course enrollments included through a CMECP® Certified Contractor program does not separately purchase the standalone $995.00 enrollment associated with that included training opportunity.

However, that individual must still independently earn the certification.

CMECP® Certified Technician Certification Process

Step 1 — Apply

Submit the CMECP® Certified Technician application.

The applicant must provide documentation demonstrating that the individual is a Master Electrician or Equivalent within the applicable state of operation.

Step 2 — Credential Verification

CMECP® will review and verify the applicant’s professional licensing or equivalent credential.

Once approved, a standalone applicant will receive authorization to purchase the CMECP® Certified Technician program.

A contractor-sponsored applicant will receive access through the applicable included technician enrollment.

Step 3 — Begin the Four-Month Training Program

The participant has four (4) months to complete the required CMECP® training and competency examinations.

Step 4 — Complete All Competency Examinations

Participants must successfully complete all nineteen (19) competency examinations with a minimum score of 80% on each required examination.

Step 5 — Pass the CMECP® Proctored Examination

The participant must successfully pass the final remotely proctored National Electrical Code® examination.

The examination consists of:

• 100 questions

• Fill-in-the-blank format

• Open-book examination

• Remote proctoring

• Minimum passing score of 80%

Step 6 — Complete the Technical Submission

The participant must submit a minimum 500-word technical lesson or essay based upon an article, section, concept, or topic from the National Electrical Code® edition assigned to the current CMECP® program.

The submission must be received within ten (10) business days following completion of the applicable examination requirements.

The submission will be reviewed by the five-member CMECP® Review Board.

A passing recommendation from at least three (3) of the five (5) Review Board members is required.

Step 7 — Earn CMECP® Certified Technician Status

After successfully completing all program requirements, the individual will receive recognition as a:

CMECP® Certified Technician

This designation provides verifiable evidence that the individual has voluntarily completed advanced electrical code training and successfully demonstrated a higher level of knowledge and understanding of the National Electrical Code®.

CMECP® Certified Technician Annual Renewal

Standalone Annual Renewal Fee: $150.00 USD

A standalone CMECP® Certified Technician who is not maintained under an active CMECP® Certified Contractor program must renew the certification annually.

The current standalone annual renewal fee is:

$150.00 USD

Applicable continuing education, professional credential, and certification maintenance requirements must also be satisfied.

CMECP® Certified Technicians who are actively maintained under an active CMECP® Certified Contractor program are included within the contractor’s $595.00 annual renewal fee and are not separately charged the $150.00 standalone renewal fee while properly maintained under that program.

If the technician is no longer affiliated with or maintained under an active CMECP® Certified Contractor program, the technician may continue the certification independently by transitioning to the standalone annual renewal structure.

CMECP® Examination Requirements

The final CMECP® examination for both certification paths is a remotely proctored, open-book National Electrical Code® examination consisting of:

• 100 fill-in-the-blank questions

• Remote online proctoring

• Minimum passing score of 80%

Participants must have:

• A reliable internet connection

• A functioning webcam

• The National Electrical Code® edition designated for the applicable CMECP® program

• Any additional materials specifically authorized by CMECP®

Examination Results

Applicants will generally receive examination results within 24 to 48 hours following completion and submission of the examination.

A minimum score of 80% is required to successfully pass.

Retesting

Applicants who do not successfully pass their first proctored examination attempt may retest one (1) additional time.

The current retest/proctor fee is:

$125.00 USD

If the applicant does not successfully pass the examination after two attempts, the applicant will be required to re-enroll in the applicable CMECP® training program and restart the certification process before becoming eligible for another examination attempt.

Student Identification

Each participant will receive a unique CMECP® Student ID when the applicable CMECP® training program is activated.

Each individual participating through a CMECP® Certified Contractor program will also receive an individual Student ID.

All participants are evaluated independently.

Payment

Payment of the applicable CMECP® program fee is required after the applicant has been approved and all applicable eligibility requirements have been verified.

Program payments are non-refundable.

Applicants may not purchase or activate the applicable CMECP® certification program until the required application and verification process has been completed.

CMECP® Program Notice

The CMECP® Certified Contractor and CMECP® Certified Technician designations are voluntary professional certifications.

They do not replace, supersede, modify, or provide any state or local:

• Electrical contractor license

• Master Electrician license

• Journeyman license

• Electrical inspection credential

• Engineering license

• Occupational license

• Governmental approval

The CMECP® designation does not guarantee acceptance by any governmental agency, employer, customer, contractor, organization, authority having jurisdiction, or other third party.

The purpose of CMECP® certification is to provide verifiable evidence of advanced education, training, examination, professional development, and demonstrated competency completed through the CMECP® program administered by Electrical Code Academy, Inc.

CMECP® certification demonstrates that the successful applicant has voluntarily pursued education beyond minimum licensing requirements and satisfied the standards established for the applicable CMECP® certification path.

CMECP® certification recipients are not employees, agents, representatives, partners, or affiliates of Electrical Code Academy, Inc. or its owners solely because they have earned or use a CMECP® designation.

Use of the CMECP® name, certification marks, logos, designations, or program benefits is subject to CMECP® requirements and does not constitute an employment relationship, agency relationship, partnership, or endorsement beyond the certification actually awarded.

By applying for or participating in the CMECP® program, the applicant acknowledges and accepts these conditions.
